Technology Beyond Capacity

To say that technology is ever-changing is such an understatement. I recall being in middle school and my technology teachers pronouncing to us that when we graduated college there would be flat screen televisions that people would hang up on the walls of their homes like a picture. It sounded cool. Low and behold, the truth is that he was knowledgeable about technological advancements and enjoyed the prospect of teaching it to others.

Admittedly my children are more advanced with technology than I am. They insisted we install satellite tv instaleld in our home to watch their favorite shows and movies. I gave in, and it was the best decision I ever made. I never miss Monday Night Football. If you looking to turn your living room into a sports bar, visit www.direct.tv.

Don’t get me wrong, I highly enjoy utilizing my cell phone, which I just purchased with web access. I use my laptop on a daily basis, although it pretty much just stays in the house. We have Wi-Fi in our home that makes playing any internet game easier on our Playstation, and each home dweller has their own computer which they access on a regular basis. I’m definitely a proponent of technology – but am certain that I will never be completely caught up and in the know.

How could we, it seems that technology is changing on an ever increasing basis, leaving our new toys in the dust with new toys that are exploding for attention and money to be bought.  It is awesome that technology has truly crossed bridges in communication with so many people and that we can experience technology advance so. In today’s society, technology is ever-present, yet intangible making it beyond all capacity. This seems to be a great thing.

The Increase of Public WiFI Connectivity

Most homes contain more than one internet ready device. Whether you have two desktops, a web tablet, and an android phone, you can stay connected.  Even when you take your mobile device with you, there are many places that will allow you to connect to the internet while out and about. Let’s take a look at the connectivity of public WiFi.

You’ve probably seen the sign at your favorite coffee-house. Free WiFi. In fact, every company-owned Starbucks location is guaranteed to have unlimited WiFi for customer use. Finding a connected café is becoming more common as customers become more mobile. By looking for a WiFi symbol or hopping online, you can find out which locations near you are wired and ready to go.

Java junkies aren’t the only ones who can reap the benefits of free internet. Many cities are implementing WiFi hotspots at public parks as well. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation are engaged in a five-year project, to bring free WiFi to 26 public parks. State Parks across California, in conjunction with AT & T, are providing wireless internet to cabins, RV parks, picnic tables and camping grounds to park visitors. Current California parks with free WiFi include, Half Moon Bay State Beach, Monterey State Historic Park, and Old Town San Diego SHP.

Municipal wireless networks, or a citywide Wireless Access Zone (WAZ), places the internet in the hands of the community. Cities like Denver, Honolulu and Spokane are making the internet available to anyone who would log on.

Internet Browsing via Smart Phones

Tech-savvy mobile phone enthusiasts now have more options than ever to help them stay connected on the go. In years past, people had to find a traditional computer station, laptop or internet cafe in order to go online, but the popularity of smart phones allows users to go online while they are traveling, at school or in the workplace.

Considerations when Purchasing an Internet-Enabled Smart Phone

If you are shopping for a smart phone, it’s important to make sure that you end up with a phone that includes the features that you’re most interested in. Although you can certainly expect popular smart phones such as Motorola Android phones to have internet capabilities, be sure to shop around and see if there are specific models that have extra features that may cater to your web browsing style even more. Examples may include a feature that fills in website forms for you automatically, or even an application for a social media website such as Facebook.

Wireless Hotspots vs. 3G Connectivity

Think about the sorts of locations from which you most often access the Internet. For example, if you tend to use the Internet in areas that have a lot of public wireless hotspots, you may not need a phone that has 3G capabilities. On the other hand, if you want to ensure that you can use the Internet whenever the desire strikes, it’s a good idea to choose a smart phone that has 3G capabilities as well as wireless hotspot connectivity. As you can see, there are as many ways to use a smart phone as your technology link!

Smartphones With the Best Internet Browsing

Laptops won’t be going away any time soon, but they have more or less been replaced as the primary tool of choice for Web surfing on the go. Their replacements? Smartphones. People rarely use their phones to simply talk; instead, they run a communications gamut of loading video, emailing and chatting on Skype, all done over the Internet. With the plethora of apps available, smartphones are nearly laptops themselves.

So which smartphones offer the best Internet browsing? While there are some stark differences between the capabilities of each smartphone, the answer lies in the user. Some users are concerned only with performance, with the desire to download and transfer files over the Web as quickly as possible and in large packages. Others value appearances such as clean images and un-grainy video. And lastly, there are those that prefer a browser that is functional and easy to use.

The latest smartphones claim to boast all of the characteristics described above, but in reality they vary in different degrees. The Apple iPhone features Apple’s own Safari Internet browser which has a high performance and great visuals, but may prove a little challenging for first time users. Unlike the app emphasis of the iPhone, the Nokia N97 gives users a nearly total browsing experience similar to using a regular computer as a page’s URL can simply be plugged in with the phone’s keyboard. Another great smartphone for browsing the Internet is the Blackberry Storm which features crisp graphics and easy usability with user settings for eliminating clutter.

National Coffee Shops With Wireless for Free

Finding an Internet connection can be a problem for travelers, especially those on business trips. While most hotels offer Internet service, it usually costs an additional fee, and can only be accessed in a designated location such as the lounge or conference room. Hence, when people are on the road and want to get connected, they head to the bastion of wireless: the local coffee shop.

However, not every town in America has its own coffee shop, which is why it’s important to keep tabs on the national establishments that can be found anywhere. And best yet, the majority of them offer wireless for free in a quest to get people through their doors and sipping their lattes. McDonald’s, for instance, not only started competing with Starbucks by serving gourmet coffee, it tried to one up the coffee giant by providing customers with free wireless. Starbucks, who had been charging for the service, followed suit and even eliminated browsing time limits in all of its locations.

The golden arches isn’t the only restaurant to offer wireless. Specialty sandwich shop Panera Bread also lets patrons link up to the Web for free. For those that prefer a little peace and quiet, major bookstore retailers Barnes & Noble and Borders provide wireless capabilities for their shoppers, who can then read an actual book or digital one online. McDonald’s, Starbucks and Barnes & Noble use AT&T as their wireless carriers without the need to create an account. Of course, a drink or item has to be purchased.

3 Different Types of Home Internet Connection

There are three different ways that you can connect to the Internet in your home: DSL, satellite, and cable. Here is some information to help you determine which option will best suit your needs.

DSL stands for digital subscriber link. This is the most common connection in the United States. This connection uses your phone line and a special modem. (This does not interfere with telephone conversations.) Computers can be connected to the modem (that customers have to purchase) through a wired connection and sometimes modems also have the capacity for wireless connections. The average download speed for DSL connections is 2.61 megabytes per second. Upload speed is .64 megabytes per second. An average cost for DSL ranges from $15 to $20.

Satellite connections require purchase or lease of a small satellite dish that can receive and transmit signals. The dish is aimed at the ISP satellite and makes connections to the Internet through the satellite. Satellite connections are popular with people in rural areas where there isn’t any DSL option. However, there is a big drawback with satellite Internet connections. Rain and snow impair the satellite dish’s ability to get a signal from the ISP satellite. Average download speed is 550K per second and around 200K for uploading.

Many cable companies offer bundles that include an Internet connection. This Internet connection uses the existing cable television wires and infrastructure from the cable company in the home. A special cable modem is required to complete the Internet connection. This is a popular option for families that already have cable. Average cost for Internet with a cable company is $45.

Cloud Computing Careers are Booming

More and more people today are hearing great things about cloud computing. Being able to have your information “in the cloud” is a great option for many people and companies. This basically allows people to store their data, whether it’s music, documents, photos or something else, online. Then they can access that data from any computer that’s connected to the Internet.

The more popular cloud computing becomes; the greater the demand is for people who can work in this industry. There are many options for those who choose to earn a degree online, especially in the information technology fields. Many of the new positions that are opening up involve work that’s related to cloud computing.

Architect, engineer, and developer are all titles that you may hear in conjunction with cloud computing. Depending on what part of the project is yours, you may have a different title. There are many languages that professionals need to know to work effectively in cloud computing, including PHP and Pearl. Different companies may require you to know different programming languages, and most will also require a certain amount of experience with programming. You will need to have a logical mind, and be able to work on deadlines to do well in this field. Critical thinking skills are also a must.

For those who are great at programming and have amazing critical thinking skills, there are many jobs available. In fact, many companies are even “poaching” the talent from their competitors. You know you have great job security when you have multiple companies fighting over you.

Deciding to Computerize Your Business

Information Security Wordle: PCI Data Security...

As large companies can attest, computerizing a business can increase your bottom line. Does the same benefit hold for a small business? Deciding to computerize your business requires evaluating a few aspects of your business processes. By the time you’re done with your analysis, you may conclude that investing in computers can, indeed, result in a tremendous savings in the long term.

Reviewing Your Business Activities

To get a good feel for potential profitability created by computerizing your business, think about the daily activities of your business. Writing out invoices and envelope addresses by hand can be time-consuming. These are activities that a computer can complete in a fraction of the time. Additionally, computers are more accurate than human beings when it comes to managing data, ensuring correct spelling on documents and calculating numbers.

Evaluating Your Computer Choices

Once you decide to migrate your business activities to a computer, you’ll want to choose the right hardware and software for your needs. Consult a computer specialist. Let him or her know exactly what types of activities you perform in your business and how quickly these processes must be completed. These details will help to identify the right computers, printers and software programs for your needs.

Securing Your Computers

The one challenge of computers is that you have less control over data security than in the case of hard copy documents that can be locked up in a safe or a secure room. You do have choices, however, to use effective firewalls, virus protection and ways to secure confidential data. It just takes some diligence, investigation and planning.
